Although written in the late nineties, I recently reread this little gem and found many of its insights still relevant. Among them, that affluent people are more likely to drive your everyday sedan than an exotic sports car. That accumulating wealth is more likely the result of frugality, planning, and discipline than the result of a high income stream or prestigious occupation. That the wealthy are just as protective and foolish over their children as the rest of us. And, that being the child of wealthy parents is more likely to harm your ability to accumulate wealth than is being the child of immigrants.

Of the insights above, the importance of frugality and planning is the most persuasive and enduring to this reader’s mind. Less persuasive are the many tables of figures so clumsily put together and coupled with pedestrian predictions like “the SUV is becoming increasingly favored by wealthy Americans.” No doubt over a decade of hindsight has made some of these predictions seem trite. The larger narrative, though, is still fresh, compelling, and worthy of application. Doing so may not make you a millionaire, but it will place you on a more solid financial footing.

I have been generally impressed with the content of this book and have found it exceptionally helpful and useful. And I highly recommend it.
The book provides what seems to be unintentional lessons about readability and usability. The selection of font size and color, for example, continuously rams home the message that one needs to make sure that the the final product is not hampered by artistic concerns. There are a few other points where I felt that the book’s layout was in the way of its message, but again, each of these were learning opportunities for me.

In a nutshell the “Siddhartha” is a story of man’s eternal quest for ultimate happiness and tranquility. Like with many other books that I have liked, at first the story seemed to me somewhat corny and not so thrilling, but I hopefully kept on going and after a little while found myself deeply immersed with the plot and ideas that are elaborated with much elegance and clarity. A central idea to which Hesse is leading(or so it seems to me), is that of unity or oneness of the world. According to main hero our world is conveniently separated into pieces, people are stratified as good or evil, young or old etc, etc. But the underlying reality is that of one indestructible, undeniable, ever-flowing, self-repeating, timeless world, a wold of change and stability at the same time. For instance the idea of unity is nicely demonstrated by main hero Siddhartha by telling his old friend that everything that happens is predetermined, that there is no free will, that we are not shaping our destiny with our actions and paving way for the future by leaving present in the shadow of past. The sinner who becomes a holly priest through hardships and long suffering is merely a deceiving illusion, a convenient picture, a way to break things into pieces for our easy comprehension. While in reality the holly priest has always lived inside the thief and existed ever since the birth and inevitably awaiting for revelation through necessary life experience. With the same token he goes on to further explain that all his life including past, present and the coming future has always been present in him at any moment. Inextricability of the world and time is the reason for loving everything surrounding us, be it a tree a piece of rock or a human being, since after all everything is a part of everything and it always goes on in a life circle and constantly transforms into all sorts of forms and hence everything you perceive is part of you and thus should be loved the same way as you love yourself.

But as Siddartha says it is difficult to describe the wisdom by words, and it frequently sounds foolish when someone attempts to do it, instead it is best gained through experience, so I think one needs to experience Hesse’s masterpiece to taste a bite of his wisdom.

Wilderness Press made its name in outdoor publishing by focusing on the High Sierra of California and later the rest of the Golden State. Their “Top Trails” series similarly is focused almost entirely on California. But if any wilderness area is deserving of coverage in the Top Trails series, the greater Yellowstone ecosystem has to be included. Now in its second edition and with a single author, this book gives you a quick overview of some of the best hikes in both Yellowstone and neighboring Grand Teton National Parks.

The Top Trails series does not aim to be comprehensive. Rather, this book is designed to list the best trails from short “family friendly” day hikes to longer overnight excursions. In the category of the former, almost all of the really popular hikes in the park are included here: Mammoth Hot Springs, Observation Point view of Old Faithful, Artist Paint Pots, Tower Falls and the fossil forest all get full write ups. If you hike any of these trails, you will also share them with hundreds of others on any given summer afternoon. This is not necessarily a bad thing: these places are popular for a reason. Slightly longer treks up Washburn peak, and hikes to various waterfalls also appear in this book and several very long day hikes (or overnight backpack trips) are featured. In all, it is a good selection. Distances, natural features, and wildlife viewing are all equally balanced.

My only complaints about the book are that several of the hikes are one way affairs requiring a shuttle. Shuttle hikes are fine, but if you are traveling any great distance to Yellowstone you will not be bringing two cars and hitch hiking is not all that easy. Also, the hike selection discusses fishing a lot. I’m good with that. Indeed, during my three summers in Yellowstone, I went fishing every chance I could. But I would have included the hike to Cascade and Grebe lake in this volume because of the opportunity to catch (and release) a unique Grayling found only in these lakes in the park. Still, this is a fine book. Reading it, I found myself remembering adventures from years ago and wondering when I would be able to schedule another visit.

Denial is a difficult book, uncomfortable to read and even more uncomfortable to review. It is a first-hand, detailed account by a Harvard expert on terrorism of her rape by a stranger when she was 15 years old. Before I bought this book, I noticed a lot of harsh reviews, so I waited… and I started re-reading the series. Well, I couldn’t wait any longer so I finally bought this book to continue Sookie’s journey, and I’m glad I did.

It’s a little bit of a slow start, but my gosh, after the last book that was jam-packed with action, it almost made sense for Sookie to have a few “normal” days!

There were some new characters introduced that were sort of odd introductions… townsfolk Sookie had known all her life but were just introduced to the reader. That was a little confusing, but still added flavor to Bon Temps, so once I opened myself up to the “tone” of this book, I began to enjoy it more and more.

Once I hit the middle of the book, I couldn’t put it down!

There are some vampire politics that might make your head spin, but Eric’s maker is finally introduced, and he and his other child are FRIGHTENING.

Bill has a neat side story that was quite unexpected. And just like with Lorena and Bill, Eric’s Maker is all-powerful over his child, so Eric is forced into quite a different role, almost painfully subdued from his usual seductive self.

There are still some fae connections – Claude and some other fairies didn’t go to Fairyland, it seems – and luckily, Sookie is still the strong, feisty heroine we’ve come to know and love.

When I finished the book, I felt satisfied. I liked it. I really liked it and will definitely re-read it.

The Sookie Stackhouse series is always a fun series to re-read.

Can one person make a difference for the poor, the helpless, and those with no hope? The case histories in this book will encourage you to think that it’s more than possible: The process can be studied, taught, and encouraged as journalist David Bornstein recounts this point through his story of what the Ashoka foundation is doing to develop social entrepreneurs and establish a discipline that can be rapidly improved through sharing of best practices. Whether you are a social entrepreneur, want to become one, or want to encourage what they do, this book is must reading. It systematizes much of what is scattered throughout many speeches, good stories, brief articles, and a variety of excellent books.

The book’s main weakness is that it doesn’t do enough to draw more than big-picture conclusions about social entrepreneurs. To me, those profiled here simply look like successful business model innovators who care more about the social impact of what they do than the financial rewards for themselves. As a result, the book’s focus is a little too narrow to be totally useful. There are also for-profit entrepreneurs who great vast amounts of social benefit using different, but similar, methods to what is described here. Both groups can learn a lot from one another. I suspect that there are also other streams of creativity conjoining as well, such as I often see accomplished by people who want to systematically raise up socially conscious entrepreneurs by the tens of millions in Africa, Asia, and South America.

I hope that this book will be updated and expanded in scope every year or two. That will be a great blessing for those who are interested in the field and those who want to help it advance.
